Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has refuted media reports indicating that Parliament wants an additional Shillings 90 billion to cater for MPs’ salaries. at Shillings 24 million every month from 11 million.
Kadaga who also doubles as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Commission said that there have been no attempts to increase or adjust salaries for MPs. He advised the MPs and members of the public to ignore the reports.
Kadaga was this afternoon responding to Dokolo North MP Paul Amoru who sought clarification about a story published in the Daily Monitor indicating that MPs had moved to double their pay to Shillings 24 million.
Amoru, who demanded an explanation from Kadaga, said that he had not come across the issue during the budget process.
According to The Daily Monitor, a leaked supplementary request indicates that Parliament wants an additional Shillings 90 billion to cater for MPs’ salaries at Shillings 24 million every month.
The extra Shilling 90 billion to cater for salary increment of 452 MPs according to the Paper means a raise of more than 100 per cent from Shillings 11 million to Shillings 24 million.
The projected budget of the Parliamentary Commission for Financial Year 2018/2019 is Shillings 459 billion and Shillings 86.9 billion will be for salaries of MPs and Parliament staff.
According to a report by the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee that oversees the Parliamentary Commission, Shillings 305.67 billion is for non-wage and Shillings 67 billion is for development budget.
