Human rights defenders are calling on parliament to prioritize the passing of the human rights defenders protection bill into law so as to be offered maximum protection from increasing violations from state agencies and the public.
Addressing journalists today at their offices in Kampala, the executive director, national coalition of human rights defenders Uganda, Robert Kirenga high lights the already visible charged atmosphere as witnessed in the battles between the presidential hopeful Hon. Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi and the security agencies where journalists were attacked in the line of duty.
Kirenga further says, the attacks are seen as a delibert move to suppress freedoms and rights of citizens and human rights defenders as well
The rights defenders are also devising means of engaging with the electoral commission on how they are expected to operate during the coming political season to avoid unnecessary clashes.
