Ajumani East MP James Mamawi expressed strong support for the recent approval by the Ugandan Parliament for the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in South Sudan. He emphasized that the move is crucial for regional security, as instability in South Sudan directly impacts Uganda’s borders, trade, and refugee situation. Mamawi highlighted Uganda’s significant refugee burden, with over 400,000 South Sudanese refugees already in the country, and warned that further instability could exacerbate this crisis.

He stressed that Uganda’s involvement in peacekeeping aligns with regional cooperation and its role in East African stability. The MP also underscored the limited resources Uganda has to support the growing refugee population, particularly the inadequate food allowances. Mamawi praised Parliament’s swift approval as a sign of national commitment to peace in the region.

“South Sudan is our neighbor and our brother. Any instability in South Sudan does not only affect them but also affects us,” Mamawi said. “The UPDF’s role in South Sudan is key to ensuring that peace is restored, which in turn guarantees the security of Uganda’s borders and prevents further destabilization in the region.”

Mamawi noted that With Uganda already hosting a substantial number of refugees, the potential for even more people fleeing conflict is a pressing concern. According to Mamawi, the situation calls for proactive measures to prevent an even larger refugee influx, which could strain Uganda’s limited resources even further.
