Hunger & Starvation In Karamoja -MPs Call For Immediate Relief Response.
Members of Parliament representing the Karamoja sub-region have cried out to the world to extend relief and support to the people of the Karamoja Sub-region who are dying of starvation. Legislators are concerned that people have started eating grass as the only alternative to survive amidst terrible hunger ravaging the region.
According to the Napak district woman MP Faith Nakut, by 8th July Napak district alone had registered 46 deaths to starvation with 2,181 households waiting to die over the same due to the dire state of famine that is ravaging Karamoja sub region. Nakut and other legislators from Karamoja have come out to cry out to the world to move first and rescue the people of Karamoja before the death toll widens.
Nakuti who broke down while addressing a press conference at parliament noted that they have depleted their salary as MPs to buy food for the most affected households due to slow response by the government.
Karamajong MPs attribute the current famine to gross insecurity in the region that disabled families from settling for cultivation and rustling that left famers with no animals on top of the dry spell that hit the region.
Meri Jino, the chairperson Kaabong district, says people have started eating grass in his district due to lack of food, he expressed fears that more elderly people are likely to die of starvation because they can’t run to other regions for greener pastures.
Now these legislators want the government to table a supplementary request in parliament expeditiously to find funds to rescue the people of karamoja with adequate relief aid.
