Following massive violence that engulfed the just concluded party primaries of the NRM, with fear that such acts might manifest in the coming general elections, Ugandan women have today launched the women situation room, a peace building vehicle that will be used to promote peace during and after the 2020/2021 general elections in Uganda .
While reading the electoral commission chairperson’s speech, Hajati Lubega Aisha sights poor communication as one of the biggest problems causing electoral violence and assures women that the commission will be working closely with women to forward their agenda.
Speaking at the launch of the situation room today in Kampala, the chairperson Steering committee, Ritah Aciro reveals that the launched peace mechanism will handle and respond to possible electoral violence across the country with a massive plan to work in 30 districts away from the previous 13 districts they covered in the 2016 general election.
The women further ask to always be included on the peace negotiating committees noting that women always play a big role in peace building across the world.
The 2020/2021 team comprising women organizations seeks to target over 3000 women and youths peace advocates who will receive peace and mediation training.
Since 1992 women have made only 3% of peace agreements in Uganda and 5% of global peace pacts including women.
