Don’t pretend Divorce is part of our Society –Kadaga

By Admin

The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga has urged the 10th parliament to stamp their way into history bypassing both Marriage and Divorce, and The Succession amendment bills, into law.

“I want to appeal to you honorable members, let us break the record; let this same parliament finish the Job. It’s been too long on the order paper; too long on the corridors; too long on statue books” Kadaga urged MPs.

Kadaga made the remarks on Saturday while officiating at the sensitization workshop on gender-related Bills for members of parliament organized by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Uganda chapter, and Uganda Women Parliamentarians Association (UWOPA).

Speaker Kadaga said the processing of the two bills have taken too long.

“Our famous Marriage and Divorce bill, I don’t know why people want to pretend yet divorce is part of our society; divorces takes place and the Divorce Act is there. What this law has done is to remove it from its own chapter and bring it together with this one because it’s there. So, it’s not an invention but part of the law” the Speaker noted.

Kadaga said people should divorce their personal problems from the Marriage and Divorce Bill 2009 and just make a law for Ugandans.

She said people should not bury their heads in the sand as if divorce is not happening, and therefore, the law is needed so that when couples divorce there are laws to manage the separation.

“I am happy that finally, the Succession law is coming because many families have suffered, people are disinherited even before the family head is buried. If you are a wife, people distribute your bed, they carry away your bed as if you will never sleep again, and they carry away your saucepans as if you will never cook again. All these are things that we need to handle and ensure that our people get proper justice and proper attention” Kadaga explained.
