ROTARY CLUB TARGETING YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECTS

By Damba Rogers

With Uganda still struggling with the burden of unemployment among her youth who constitute 70% of the population, now rotary club Uganda is shifting posts to setting up vocational training schools in different parts of the country to help provide youths with hands on skills to increase on the quality of workers in the country.

Addressing a news conference in Kampala today to announce the upcoming regional rotary project fair slated for 8th to 12th Februarythis year, the chairman organizing committee Stephen Mwanjereveals that, during the course of the upcoming event, the rotary president among other Rotarians from across the world will commission one of the vocational training institute in Buikwe that targets to equip over 1000 youth with skills and will also do a ground breaking ceremony that will pave way for the construction of another vocational school in Busunju as these are all aimed at reducing unemployment among Ugandan youth.

However, the 9211 rotary district governor, Mugisha Kenneth adds that currently they are bringing in the country UGX.3.5M annually used in the provision of social, economic services to the needy communities which they now want to increase to USD.35M in the next three to five years.

The Rotarians’ ambitious target follows the increasing demand from the communities in Uganda that have not fully been served.

The coming rotary fair that will attract Rotarians from USA, UK, Austria, Australia, Nigeria, Kenya,Uganda among other countries is geared at setting grounds that will see Uganda’s rotary club increase its humanitarian services, peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention, economic empowerment it extends to vulnerable communities in Uganda.

Rotary clubs in Uganda have engaged in a number of projects among them being the construction of a modern blood bank at Mengo hospital, Cancer ward and linear accelerator at Nsambya hospital, provision of clean water to communities among other projects.                                                                                         Ends
