Use Better Methods to Counter Locusts -Government Urged.

The chairperson of the parliamentary forum on climate change Lawrence Biyika Songa has cautioned government on methods that have been adopted to spray swarms of locusts that crossed from Kenya to Ugadan parts of Karamojja.
He claims that chemicals to be used are dangerous to other insects like bees which help in pollination. This during a training of MPs on climate change organised by the parliamentary forum on climate change.
While speaking at the training of Ugandan legislators and other stake holders on the use of climate information services in development planning, Biyika who also chairs the parliamentary committee on climate change attributed the invasion of locusts to much rains that were received last year which created favorable green environment that attracts locusts.
He added that locusts originated from Yemen where the government was unable to control them due to political instabilities.He however wondered why government of Uganda waited for the swam to enter the country to counter react, yet there was a chance to work with the government of Kenya and tackle them from a foreign land.
Songa warned that aerial spraying of Locusts that have been proposed by government is very dangerous to other insects especially the bees and he suggested locusts be sprayed at night since they only move during day.
The leader of opposition Betty Aol Ochan used the event to call upon government to guide the nation on the impact of chemicals used to kill locusts on human beings, and also guide people whether they are edible.
