The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) has expressed deep concern over the incident involving top TV journalist Miracle Ibra, who was reportedly brutalized by yet-to-be-identified security personnel on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. The incident took place while Ibra was covering the nomination of Elias Nalukola Luyimbazi, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.
UPPA describes the incident as a troubling violation of press freedom and highlights the importance of safeguarding the safety of journalists who contribute significantly to Uganda’s democratic process and national development.
The association has called on security forces to respect the rights of journalists, particularly those covering elections and other important events. UPPA stresses that the media should be seen as an essential part of a healthy democracy, playing a crucial role in holding public officials accountable and providing the public with reliable information.
“The safety of journalists is essential for a functioning democracy, and no journalist should be harmed while carrying out their duties,” said Samuel Ibanda Mugabi, President of UPPA. “We urge the relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.”
UPPA also called on the government to create a supportive environment in which journalists can work freely without fear of intimidation or violence. Reporters must be able to perform their roles in a safe and secure environment, particularly during elections and other significant national events.
The association reaffirmed its solidarity with Miracle Ibra and all journalists who have faced violence or intimidation while performing their duties. UPPA remains committed to advocating for press freedom and the protection of journalists in Uganda.
