Members of Parliament on the Natural Resources Committee of Parliament chaired by Hon. Keefa Kiwanuka, have tasked officials from the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) to guide Government on how best to disseminate factual weather forecasts to enable one of Uganda’s key sectors [Agriculture] to grow.
The MPs also raised concerns over the concentration of weather centers in particular areas of the country, with others having few orno weather stations to provide weather information.
UNMA Executive Director Festus Luboyera said the Authority was working to provide weather radars to be set up in Entebbe, Mbarara and Lira districts.
“These radars cover a distance of 450km and will go a long in improving our weather forecasts,” said Luboyera.
He told the committee that two radars to be set up at Entebbe and in Lira were already in the procurement process at shs11 billion and shs9 billion respectively.
The UNMA team also highlighted support by international partners like World Vision that translates weather information into local languages for easy interpretation by locals.
