Tanzanian Ambassador to Uganda, Maj Gen Paul Kisesa Simuli, has urged East African countries to draw inspiration from the legacy of former Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere to strengthen unity and the federation agenda. “Let us emulate Nyerere’s vision and leadership style, which emphasized unity, equality, and justice. By doing so, we can create a stronger and more united East Africa,” Simuli said.
Simuli noted that by emulating Nyerere’s philosophy, East African countries can foster greater unity and cooperation, promoting a stronger and more united region. Speaking at the launch of the Africa Mashariki Fest pilgrimage to Butiama, Nyerere’s ancestral home, Simuli praised Nyerere’s role in uniting Tanzania’s multi-ethnic nation, promoting the Swahili language, and contributing to the establishment of the first East African Community.
The pilgrimage, organized by Africa Mashariki Fest, aims to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Nyerere’s passing and reflect on his legacy. Pan Africanists in Uganda, led by Tendo Kisembo, plan to use the event to discuss Nyerere’s fight against corruption and pray for his canonization. They also plan to mark the 25th anniversary of the East African Community revival and discuss bottlenecks that have limited its growth.
Prof Mwambutshya Ndebesa from Makerere University and Dr Nansozi Muwanga, Head of the Julius Nyerere Leadership Center, emphasized the need for East Africa to reflect on Nyerere’s leadership to strengthen solidarity and popularize the issue among youth. The events, scheduled for October 14th, will also address the challenges that have hindered the growth of the federation.
“As Nyerere once said, ‘Unity is the foundation of our prosperity.’ Let us unite in his legacy and build a brighter future for East Africa,” Simuli added.
