Uganda’s Population Projected To Grow  56 million By 2030

Adiga Julius

Uganda’s population is projected to increase rapidly to 56 million people in 2030 and 102 million people by 2050, Finance Minister Hon. David Bahati has said.

In a statement tabled in Parliament, Hon. Bahati said the key drivers for the rapid population growth in Uganda include high fertility and declining mortality rate resulting in a high population growth rate of 3% every year.

The statement was in commemoration of World Population Day, slated for July 11, due next week.

According to Bahati, Uganda’s population has grown fast over the last two decades from 16.7 million in 1991 to 34.9 million in 2014, and to population projected 41.5 million people to date.

He said the declining mortality is attributed to increased child immunization, improved nutrition, and improved hygiene, among others.

The minister stated that as a result of the rapid population growth, Uganda is currently the second youngest population in the world with over 78% of its population aged below 30 years, only second to Niger whose young population stands at 83%.

This he said means that Uganda’s population is growing by about 1.5 million people every year.

This year’s World Population Day will be celebrated under the theme; Leveraging Uganda’s population dynamics for a resilient future amidst Covid-19.

The World Population Day seeks to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues as established by the then  Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in 1989.
