The permanent secretary ministry of water and transport, Badru Waiswa reveals govt plans to start a marine training institute to train ship captains in the country.
According to Mr. Waiswa, the country has only two captains under training in the marine training school in Tanzania.
He further notes that they plan to have the training institute on the shores of R. Nile in Namasagali and will be co-hosted by Busitema university since it owns the land.
He adds that if all goes well and govt provides them with the needed resources, the institute will be running by the start of next financial year.
Ship captains take care of the business, navigation and operation of all types of vessels. The captain works with officers and crews to set a ship’s speed and course, monitor a ship’s positions, and avoid hazards. Captains also ensure their ship’s engines and equipment are maintained and that proper safety procedures are followed. Additionally, they might supervise passenger and cargo loading and discharge, keep logs, and document pollution control efforts. Ship captains might spend extended periods of time away from home.
