The Uganda Red Cross is consultations with all stakeholders as it works on amending the 1964 Act which establishes its operations in Uganda.
At the consultative meeting going on in Kampala today, the legal officer of the humanitarian body, Alex Luganda reveals they are using Hon. Alex Byarugaba Bakunda to move a private members bill to move the process which is in the final stages.
In the proposed amendments, the red cross seeks to call on govt to provide funding to the organization as well as cause for tax exemption to goods imported by the organization since the goods are meant to facilitate humanitarian services to Ugandans under need.
However, the secretary general Uganda Red Cross, Robert Kwesiga urges legislators to handle the proposed amendments with urgency since red cross is now executing duties under tight conditions being that the law they are operating in does not fully cover the scope they are now operating in.
Uganda Red Cross has made strides to have the *RedCross Act 1964* revised to cater for the wider mandate the National Society delivers on in this Country.
The revised version will also clearly bring out the auxiliary role of the National Society to the Govt efforts in areas expressed as the Mandates of the Red Cross in Uganda.
Today, July 3rd 2019, a presentation of the final draft of the Uganda Red Cross Society Bill, intended to revise the Red Cross Act, cap 57 Laws of Uganda has been presented to partners by the Uganda Red Cross Legal team
The Uganda Red Cross was established by an Act of Parliament in 1964, but its objectives, functions, management, governance and funding were not expressly catered for in the establishing Act.
This Bill therefore seeks to strengthen and promote the capacity of the Red Society.
