Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has urged the government to tighten regulations on the mushrooming DNA paternity laboratories in the country to avoid cases of fake results that threaten to break families.
In his communication while starting off today’s parliament session, the deputy speaker of parliament Thomas Tayebwa expressed concerns over the recent upsurge in DNA testing saying it has mostly affected children who are found victims.
Tayebwa asked Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to guide the nation on how DNA should be conducted without breaking families and ruining the lives of innocent children. He emphasized the sensitivity of the matter and urged the government not to look on but at least provide counseling services to victims.
The Deputy Speaker also called on the government to ensure that DNA laboratory centers are regulated to avoid the issuance of fake results that might rub salt into the already existing wound.
MPs joined the deputy speaker and urged the Ministry of Health to put a halt to Covid-19 testing and carry out a review of all DNA testing labs across the country. Legislators gave their opinion on the escalating demand for DNA testing as some propose that it should be mandatory at birth.
The government has assured parliament that they are going to carry out an assessment of the laboratories to ascertain if they are accredited for that purpose.
