District Woman MP for Kole District Judith Alyek has appealed to the government to strengthen public health measures in villages to curb the spread of Covid -19.
According to Hon Alyek who is also a public health educator, public awareness of Covid-19 in villages is not as robust as in urban settings and cities hence need to for government to do more.
“You see waves are continuing to come as far as the infections of covid are concerned; we had the first wave, now we are in the second wave, and health officials say there is a third wave coming. Are we going to wait for the third wave to do something? Hon Judith queried.
She says in order to achieve maximum coverage of protection of people from covid-19, people in the villages must also be sensitized and vaccinated against the disease.
She says that community sensitization is still lacking more especially deep in the villages yet most of the people in those communities are illiterates who need continues mobilization.
“What I see right now is constant sensitization and mobilization in towns; people are using many channels – television, radios and some are getting vaccinated within urban settings leaving people in the villages and yet this is where we come from and where agriculture -the backbone of our country’s economy starts from. So, when you leave them behind and pretend that we are fighting covid within cities, municipalities, and towns, we are wasting time” Hon Judith explained.
The legislator adds that more emphasis must be put on prevention than treatment because infections are already in communities, which can also lessen the work of medical workers.
