As a way of saving the environment, the govt of Uganda plans to start supplying its security forces with gas to cut on the cost of cooking using firewood and charcoal.
Security forces in Uganda are well known for using too much firewood and charcoal to cooks which contributes to massive destruction of the environment in the country.
Speaking at the launch of Fortune gas today in Kampala, the prime minister for Uganda Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda says introducing security forces on clean energy sources will be coupled with the scrapping of taxes off clean sources of energy with the aim of scaling down market prices to enable Ugandans to afford them.
According to Capt. Mike Mukula who is the board chairman, Fortune Gas Uganda, an average Ugandan spends a minimum of UGX. 135000 on charcoal, UGX.140,000 on electricity, and UGX.100,000 on gas for cooking a month which costs are very high calling for more price cuts for vulnerable Ugandans to be able to afford clean energy.
The continued cutting down of forests in Uganda has seen an increase in temperatures to 1.4 degrees and this affects agriculture and health and this is a result of deforestation for timber and charcoal burning.
In the past 25 years, Uganda has lost 63% of its forest cover due to tree cutting for firewood, timber, and charcoal as well as the growth of towns, farms. This per national forest authority.
