The Rwenzori Marathon has received a significant boost with Toyota’s donation of two vehicles, further elevating the excitement around the event. With runners from 30 countries already registered, organizers are confident that the marathon will not only promote Uganda internationally but also boost tourism and the economy.
“The Rwenzori Marathon is more than just a race; it’s an opportunity to showcase Uganda’s beauty and potential to the world,” said Amos Wekesa, team leader for Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon. “We’re thrilled to have runners from 30 countries participating, and we’re expecting many more to join.”
The marathon, slated for August 24th in Kasese district, will feature three races: 42km, 21km, and 5km, all taking place around the breathtaking Rwenzori Mountains. Wekesa emphasized that the event is certified by the International Athletics Federation, allowing athletes to use it as a qualifying platform for international races, including the Olympics.
“We’re hoping to raise $10 million from this event, which will significantly boost the economy, especially in Kasese,” Wekesa added. “With hundreds of people expected to flock to the event, we’re confident that it will have a positive impact on the local community.”
In a bid to promote environmental sustainability and reduce carbon footprint, Toyota by CFAO Mobility has provided two hybrid electric vehicles – the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric and Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid Electric SUV – to lead the routes for runners according to Isaac Tegule the Marketing Manager.
In a gesture of support for local talent, 100 runners from Kasese have been selected to participate in the marathon at no cost.
