PostBank Uganda Sees Surge of Unbanked Customers Through ZeroFlex Account

By Solomon Lubowa

PostBank Uganda has recorded significant growth in financial inclusion through its Zeroflex account, which has attracted a large number of first-time banking customers.

Data shows that 89 percent of Zeroflex account holders are “new-to-bank” customers—individuals who had never previously held a formal account.

This achievement highlights the bank’s success in reaching the unbanked population, an area where the wider banking industry has historically struggled.

The uptake is particularly strong among Ugandans aged 18 to 39, reflecting the country’s youthful and digitally inclined population.

According to Adons Aryong, Head of Data Analytics at PostBank, this demographic represents not only the largest market segment but also the most receptive to digital financial solutions.

To meet their needs, the bank has invested in technology and innovation to design products that are both simple and accessible.

The Zeroflex account’s popularity is driven by its ease of use and cost-friendly features. It charges no maintenance or ledger fees and allows free wallet-to-bank transfers through PostBank’s Wendi platform.

Customers can open an account instantly from anywhere without visiting a branch, eliminating bureaucratic delays.

Aryong notes that this convenience appeals to Uganda’s tech-savvy generation, which values speed and simplicity in financial services.

Digital accounts like Zeroflex are increasingly becoming the default medium for everyday transactions, including paying school fees and receiving remittances.

This shift marks a change in consumer behavior, where digital banking is no longer a supplement to cash but an essential part of financial life.

Industry players say that for the broader banking sector, the success of Zeroflex is a wake-up call. The competitive edge is no longer determined by the size of a branch network but by the ability to deliver seamless, affordable, and digital-first experiences.

With nearly 90 percent of users being first-time customers, Uganda’s untapped market for digital banking remains vast.
