The Business Committee of Parliament convened this morning to receive the legislative agenda but also discuss increasing transparency in parliamentary business, aiming to address the corruption scandal that has tarnished its reputation.
Chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, the meeting was attended by key figures, including Opposition Leader Joel Ssenyonyi, Government Chief Whip Dennis Hamson Obua, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and other committee chairpersons.
The government has introduced a list of 66 bills for the fourth session of the 11th Parliament, as confirmed by the government chief whip Denis Hamson Obua .
These proposed laws include amendments to various acts, such as the Wetlands Act, UPDF Act, Labor Act. Transition Justice bill among others. However, the Chief Opposition Whip John Baptist Nambeshe has expressed disappointment that the government has not prioritized electoral law amendments.
Committee chairpersons who attended the closed meeting revealed that the emphasis has been on their commitment to enhancing their transparency in Parliament’s business to restore its damaged repute.
Prof. Elijah Mushemeza, the whip of the parliamentary committees chairpersons announced plans to organize a training session for all committee chairpersons on methods to avoid corruption in their work.
Additionally, members of the business committee have requested that meetings of the business committee be held at least four times a year to monitor progress easily.
