Opinion | Tweheyo Ronald: Why the Democratic Party Needs Richard Sebamala
The Democratic Party (DP) in Uganda stands at a critical juncture. Once a dominant force in Uganda’s political landscape, it has struggled in recent years to maintain relevance amid a shifting political climate and the rise of newer political movements like the National Unity Platform (NUP). In this context, Richard Sebamala — the Member of Parliament for Bukoto Central — offers a compelling case as a potential leader who could reinvigorate the party’s direction and restore its influence.
A Fresh Face with Grounded Experience
Sebamala’s tenure as MP has been marked by a pragmatic approach to development, earning him recognition in his constituency. His ability to deliver tangible results and maintain a strong grassroots presence sets him apart in a political environment where many struggle to connect with the everyday challenges of citizens.
Strategic Networks
Sebamala’s personal and professional connections — including friendships with regional leaders such as President William Ruto of Kenya and ties to influential business figures — may give the DP an advantage in navigating East African politics and regional cooperation. Such networks could help reposition the party on a broader stage.
A Leader Who Has Withstood Pressure
What is perhaps most admirable about Sebamala is his resilience. In a political landscape where party allegiance often shifts in response to short-term gains, he has resisted pressure from larger parties like NUP. This suggests a commitment to principle and a belief in building the DP from within, rather than abandoning it for more popular alternatives.
Vision for a Revived Democratic Party
Sebamala has openly expressed his desire to restore the Democratic Party to its former stature. His emphasis on returning to the party’s core values — integrity, justice, and democratic governance — is a message that resonates with many Ugandans disillusioned by the current state of politics.
A Possible Turning Point
While there are challenges ahead, Sebamala’s victory over former Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi in Bukoto Central speaks volumes about his political potential. Whether or not he ultimately becomes the party’s flagbearer, his leadership may well be the spark the DP needs to reassert itself as a meaningful voice in Ugandan politics.
