Obongi, Uganda – In a milestone achievement, West Nile has been successfully connected to the national grid, paving the way for social and economic transformation. Dr. Didi Bokha, MP for Obongi County, has commended the government and stakeholders for their efforts, but emphasized that the journey is far from over.
“This connection is just the beginning. We must now focus on ensuring the productive use of electricity to drive growth and development,” Dr. Bokha said in an interview. “The question on everyone’s mind is: what next?”
To unlock the full potential of this connection, Dr. Bokha stressed the need for deliberate steps to map and profile electricity users, assessing their capacity and readiness to utilize the resource effectively. “This will enable us to develop a comprehensive user readiness development plan,” he explained.
Dr. Bokha also highlighted the importance of education and capacity building, urging Wenreco, the electricity supplier, to create awareness among users about connection and usage requirements. “This will empower them to harness electricity efficiently and safely,” he said.
Furthermore, Dr. Bokha called on Wenreco to enhance its customer care services, streamline the connection process, and establish a 24/7 emergency response system to address power outages and maintain user confidence.
As the region moves forward, Dr. Bokha emphasized the need to track progress and measure the impact of the connection on households, communities, institutions, businesses, and industrialists. “By doing so, we will realize the benefits of improved access to electricity and unlock the social and economic transformation of West Nile,” he concluded.
