Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has been declared the winner of the Kawempe Division North parliamentary by-election. The official results, released by Returning Officer Makabayi Henry, show Nalukoola securing a commanding lead, garnering 17,764 votes.
The by-election, held on 13th march yesterday saw a total of 27,596 valid votes cast. Nalukoola’s substantial margin of victory over his closest competitor, Nambi Faridah Kigongo of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who received 8,593 votes, highlights the strong support for NUP in the constituency.
The seat fell vacant following the death of the then Member of Parliament Muhammed Segirinya in January this year.
“Accordingly, as Returning Officer for KAMPALA CITY/Electoral District and in accordance with Section 77(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, cap 177, I declare Luyimba Elias Nalukoola who has obtained the largest number of votes, to be the elected candidate for Kawempe Division North Constituency,” announced Henry Makabayi at the Makerere University School of Public Health Auditorium.
The election featured a diverse field of candidates, including independents and representatives from other political parties. Among them, Murerwa Hanifah Karadi (Independent) received 381 votes, Mukiiibi Sadat Nalukoola (FDC) received 239 votes, and Luwemba Lusswa Muhammad (Independent) received 240 votes.
The election saw a total of 28,002 ballot papers counted, with 406 rejected ballots and 49 spoilt ballots. The high voter turnout and decisive results indicate strong civic engagement in the Kawempe North region.
The victory for NUP is seen as a significant win for the party, further solidifying its presence in the Kampala metropolitan area.
