The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus has unanimously resolved to support the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in South Sudan, following a formal appeal from South Sudanese President Salva Kiir. The decision was reached during a caucus meeting held at State House, Entebbe, today.
Addressing Journalists at Parliament ,The Government Chief Whip Obua Denis Hamson, noted that the deployment is a “necessary intervention for peace enforcement to protect lives, restore stability, and prevent further escalation of conflict” in the neighboring nation.
The resolutions, released after the meeting, highlight Uganda’s “historical commitment to patriotism, nationalism, and Pan-Africanism” and its “longstanding role in safeguarding the lives and property of Ugandans and Africans at large, through strategic military interventions.”
The caucus acknowledged President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s prompt response to President Kiir’s appeal, emphasizing the “spirit of brotherhood, solidarity, security of Uganda and the economy.” They also recognized the “shared historical and regional ties” between Uganda and South Sudan.
It’s worth noting that the UPDF deployed in Juba and Bor in December 2013, when a fierce civil war erupted between Kiir and the forces loyal to the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar.
Obua was accompanied by the Caucus executive members, including General Secretary Hon. Lillian Aber, who is also the State Minster for Disaster, Treasurer Hon. Nakut Faith and Publicly Hon. Brandon. Kintu.
The NRM caucus’s support paves the way for a formal request to Parliament for approval of the UPDF deployment.
