Kapchrwa District Woman MP Phyllis Chemutai has pledged to intensify efforts to economically empower youth and women in Kapchrwa District, citing unemployment and poverty as key challenges she plans to address if re-elected in 2026.
Chemutai, who is the current representative for the District, identified youth unemployment in rural areas as a growing concern. “Many young people have completed school but remain jobless, and that idleness is pushing them into bad habits,” she said. “I will prioritize projects focused on economic empowerment, both through government and NGO support.”
She added that her constituents, many of whom are farmers, consistently request vegetable and tree seeds, as well as financial support. Chemutai promised to continue lobbying for more agricultural and livelihood support, especially targeting organized youth and women groups.
Women, she noted, continue to shoulder a heavy economic burden. “They are trying their best, but what they earn is still very little. We need to help them grow and stabilize their households,” she said, linking poverty to rising cases of domestic violence. “The solution lies in economic empowerment.”
Chemutai also acknowledged government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and youth funds, saying they have made a difference, but stressed that more still needs to be done.
Her remarks came shortly after she was officially nominated by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to run again for the Woman MP seat in the upcoming party primaries. She expressed excitement and confidence heading into the campaign season.
“This nomination gives me the stamina to speak to my people, to share what I have achieved and what I still intend to do,” Chemutai said. “I’ve fulfilled many of the promises in my manifesto, and I am committed to completing what I’ve started.”
The NRM primaries are scheduled to take place next month ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
