The Nakawa west legislator Joel Ssenyonyi has today assumed office as the leader of the opposition to start the two-and-a-half-year term with a caution from the outgoing LOP Mathias Mpuuga to be ready for backstabbers in opposition.
Ssenyonyi has committed to live up to the public’s expectations, especially the opposition supporters.
The handover ceremony attended by shadow Cabinet Ministers and other Opposition legislators; started from the LOP office where outgoing LOP Mpuuga handed over instruments including files and the official seat of the LOP before proceeding to the boardroom for speeches.
Senyonyi noted that his agenda will not defer much from Mpuuga’s climax as the fight against the violation of human rights will top his menu.
The NUP spokesperson gave confidence to the public that expects much from the opposition that they will do everything possible to live up to the billing. He called for support from his colleagues for the good of the opposition.
Ssenyonyi also shed light on the position of the deputy chief whip that had been given to the Mityana Municipality legislator Francis Zzaake but rejected by the speaker of parliament Anita Among on grounds that it is nonexistent in the law.
The Out-going Leader of the Opposition now parliamentary commissioner Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba pledged to support the incoming Leader of Opposition Joel Senyonyi.
He also extended a caution to his successor to balance the interests of all the political Parties in opposition since his jurisdiction extends beyond NUP. Mpuuga made it clear to Senyonyi that his challenges would not only be the government but even fellow legislators in opposition who would backstab him.
