Inmates in Murchison bay prison Luzira have requested the speaker of parliament Rebecca Lasagna for an opportunity to take part in the voting process in Uganda.

This was raised by  moses Abehikye the representative of inmates in Murchison bay luzira prisons to hon Rebecca Kadaga during her visit to prisons around Uganda.

“Inmates who are Ugandans remain citizens even when they are convicted, why don’t they accord them their right to vote,” he said.
He added that the constitution of Uganda gives them rights to vote as citizens but parliament has been silent about it.

Abehikye among other challenges requested government to establish of court at regional level to handle special crimes like corruption and wild life related crime .

He said under the current  arrangements prisoners  are ferried to Kampala from far places such as Gulu and other places.

He also requested that the speaker to plead the president over the prerogative of mercy for the elderly inmates .
