In a bid to extend its reach to the grassroots and repair its damaged reputation, Parliament has increased the number of sittings to be held in Gulu at the end of this month. This move is part of Parliament’s upcountry sittings initiative, aimed at bringing the legislative body closer to the people.
Today, Speaker of Parliament Anita Anet Among convened a meeting with Members of Parliament from the greater north and technical staff to update them on the preparedness for the upcoming House sitting in Gulu, scheduled to commence on August 28.
According to Anthony Akol (MP Kilak North), chairperson of the Acholi parliamentary group, the closed meeting resolved to increase the number of sittings from two to three, which will run until August 30.
Akol revealed that the Gulu sittings will prioritize regional matters affecting West Nile, Acholi, Lango, and Karamoja. The increased number of sittings and focus on regional matters are expected to provide a platform for constituents to engage with their leaders and address pressing issues affecting their communities.
In a significant development, Parliament has agreed to fence off Kaunda grounds as part of its social corporate responsibility.
This move is expected to benefit the local community and enhance the overall sitting experience. Martin Ojara Mapenduuzi, the Bardege-Layibi division legislator, welcomed the development, stating that the people of Northern Uganda will greatly benefit from the Gulu sitting in various aspects.
As Parliament takes its proceedings to the people, expectations are high for a productive and impactful sitting in Gulu.
