Don’t Negotiate With Defilers
Dr. Evelyn Akech- sub-regional general secretary for East and Africa Public Services International has called on the implementation of laws against defilement and incest.
Dr. Akech says sometimes people who are arrested for defilement and incest are left scot-free when the offenders are left to negotiate with the families of the victims because the offenders are breadwinners, leaving the victims without justice.
She made the remarks during a workshop on gender-based violence held at imperial Royal in Kampala.
She says the Police must not allow clan negotiations with the offenders of defilement if the vice is to be fought in society.
“Let the people who have committed defilement be sentenced for life “why should you sleep with your daughter,’ then the people say that your breadwinner, Dr. Akech noted.
She says some men have taken the opportunity of their children being home because of the lockdown to defile their own children instead of bonding time which is unfortunate.
According to the Uganda police report, over 14,000 cases of defilement were reported in 2020 indicating that 20% of the children aged 13-17 had experienced emotional abuse.
She also calls on community education and campaigns against defilement and incest for people to know that it’s an abomination for a parent to defile their own child.
