MAK LECTURERS SHOULD NOT To
EET STUDENT PAST 8PM

By Damba Rogers

An Anti Sexual Harassment Committee which was instituted in Makerere University has recommended that lectures should be banned from meeting students past 8pm and in closed rooms.

In February 2018 the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University Prof.Barnabus Nawangwe instituted a committee to investigate the case of sexual harassment by male lecturers against their female students and come up with possible recommendation.

The Committee which has been headed by Dr.Sylivia Tamale has recommended to management that lecturers should be stopped from dealing with students complaints regarding marks, registration, graduation among others and be handled by the Dean of the College or principal because some lecturers were using this opportunity to ask students for sex in return for marks.

The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University Prof Barnabus Nawangwe says they will install the CCTV camera as has been recommended by the Committee but they as will continue dealing with any case related to sexual harassment and be disposed off urgently.

Makerere University suspended Dr Swizen Kyomuhendo over allegations of sexually harassing female students, he was pinned in an investigative story by a local TV where he was purportedly seen asking a female student sex in exchange for marks.
He was summoned by the university to respond to the allegations on 1st March, 2018 which he did.

The suspension of Dr.Kyomuhendo was confirmed by the university publicist, Rita Namisongo then.
