Malawi health delegates hail Uganda cancer institute.

A health delegation from Malawi have hailed Uganda’s Cancer institute for its autonomy and recent scientific achievements.
The delegation led by the Chief of Health Services in Malawi, Dr Charles Mwansambo say they are in the country to learn about the Uganda Cancer Institute(UCI) and how it is operated and managed.
Mwansambo said in an interview with journalists at (UCI) that the fact that the cancer institute is independent, has made them access funding, but also professional support and innovations. He says the institute also has state of the art machines which they will ensure to procure.
“it is a very impressive Canter with a lot of systems in place ,a number of impressive collaborations too, so it’s just a right place, to come to and learn from ,”Dr Mwansambo noted.
He said that that for the Cancer center in Malawi to work properly, the Malawi Government needs to plan properly following the Uganda example ,and especially work of its autonomy.
“we will go to back to follow some of the good things that have already happened here in Uganda cancer institute, Mwansambo said. He said they could copy and paste the strategy Uganda cancer institute is using.
He revealed that currently cancer patients in Malawi are treated in the general hospital which is not adequate.
The the Executive Director Uganda cancer institute Dr Jackson Orem tipped the health delegation to use a multi sectored approach when dealing in the area of Infrastructure development .
Orem said that the Malawi government should ensure that it works with international automatic agency to help them in designing the radiotherapy machine bunker and purchasing, the equipment.
