Uganda enters the festive season—a period marked by increased travel and heightened road activity—the “Safe Kids, Safe Future” campaign has continued its nationwide effort to protect the country’s youngest road users.

The latest outreach was held at Mother Kevin School, where the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), together with the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) and the Uganda Traffic Police, delivered a pre-Christmas road-safety programme infused with both education and festive cheer.

With the holiday season approaching, ITMS urged children and parents to exercise greater discipline on the road, noting that celebrations are safer and more enjoyable when everyone adopts responsible road-use behaviour.

During the engagement, pupils took part in interactive sessions focusing on road signs, pedestrian safety, and safe behaviour around traffic. To reinforce these lessons, ITMS distributed reflective vests, bracelets, and helmets, highlighting how such gear enhances visibility—especially during evening hours, when festive travel typically increases.

A representative from the school emphasized that equipping children with practical safety knowledge protects them not only during the school term but also during the busy festive period, when road accidents tend to rise.

Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura highlighted the long-term value of instilling safety habits early:

“When you start with young children, it becomes easier to influence the older generation. A child can remind a parent that the traffic light is red. This is why we believe starting with the young will help us achieve long-term safe road behaviour.”

Children expressed heartfelt appreciation to ITMS, MoWT, and the Uganda Police Force for taking the time to teach and empower them.

Since late October, the “Safe Kids, Safe Future” campaign has sensitized more than 500 schoolchildren across four schools in Kampala, marking a significant step forward in strengthening road safety awareness among Uganda’s young learners.

ITMS announced that the corporate social responsibility campaign will continue next year, in partnership with MoWT and the Uganda Traffic Police:

“We are committed to reaching more schools and communities, ensuring that Uganda’s children grow up with lifelong road safety habits. “
