The National Resistance Movement (NRM) will hold a nationwide village baraza on May 6, 2025, to verify details of registered party members across the country. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, also the NRM National Chairperson, is expected to lead the exercise from his home village personally, marking what government officials call a “historic milestone” for the party’s grassroots organization.
Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, addressing journalists at Parliament today, announced that the baraza will involve every NRM leader and member retreating to their respective villages to confirm existing member information.
“The purpose is to correct key particulars—such as names and telephone numbers. However, this is not an exercise for registering new members,” Obua clarified.
He emphasized that the NRM now possesses what it considers a credible, village-by-village voters’ register, generated from a recent membership registration drive.
The initiative, backed by the NRM Secretariat, aims to solidify grassroots support and data accuracy ahead of future internal and national electoral activities. According to Obua, the President’s participation underscores the significance of the exercise, which will happen simultaneously in all NRM strongholds.
Focus on Service Delivery and Accountability
Obua also shared insights from President Museveni’s address to the caucus during the meeting at State House Entebbe. The President called on all NRM leaders to intensify monitoring and oversight of government programs, citing growing concerns from the public during his ongoing zonal tours.
“Wherever he goes, citizens are raising complaints—especially around the implementation of key programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM),” said Obua.
Reports have emerged of inconsistencies in PDM fund distribution, with some beneficiaries receiving less than the designated amount, and others subjected to questionable charges.
President Museveni, according to Obua, urged leaders to recognize their role as “Nyamparas”—custodians of the people’s interests—and to spearhead efforts against corruption and mismanagement at all levels.
The NRM caucus resolved to take these concerns seriously and act on them decisively in the weeks ahead, especially at the local government level.
