Airtel launches prepaid virtual card to enable global transactions.

Ugandans can now access global digital opportunities using the Airtel Money Global Pay virtual prepaid card.
Launched by Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, Managing Director Japhet Aritho highlighted that the card provides a secure and convenient way to make international payments.
Customers can use it to pay for services from global merchants like Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba.
For entertainment lovers, once the card is downloaded through the MyAirtel app, they can stream entertainment on Netflix, Spotify, and Apple Music.
The card is also payment for Online learning possible through Coursera, Duolingo, and Udemy just like Digital advertising on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
Aritho emphasized Airtel’s commitment to innovative financial solutions, especially as Uganda’s digital financial sector grows.
“We are delighted to launch a product that reflects our commitment to providing innovative and accessible financial solutions to Ugandans. We recognize that USSD technology is sunsetting and that’s why we are leading with a prepaid Virtual Card, on the MyAirtel App”-Aritho.
Mobile money transactions surged to 191 trillion shillings in 2023, a 23% increase from the previous year.

He added, “Airtel has invested heavily in internet connectivity across the country and upgraded our Airtel App, which is now more secure, enabling Ugandans to do more—not only in connecting with each other but also in transacting business.
“We have more than 16 million Ugandans who have access to our Airtel wallet today, and these 16 million people can now do any transactions, anyway through these ecosystems that we are talking about”-Aritho
Lenin Oyuga, Mastercard’s Head of Telco Digital Partnerships, noted the rising adoption of digital transactions in Uganda and stressed the importance of collaborating with Airtel Money to enhance financial inclusion.
To address the fears of possible, Airtel has partnered with Network International to handle Card Management and Fraud prevention to advance digital inclusion for not only Uganda but the entire continent.
