Uganda’s Parliament has dismissed accusations that Speaker Anita Among made tribal comments against the Baganda during Thursday’s heated debate on the National Coffee Amendment Bill 2024.
According to Mr. Chris Obore, Director of Communication and Public Affairs, a video circulating online shows the Speaker consulting with the Clerk at the microphone during the debate.
However, Obore claims that the video does not capture the full context of Speaker Among’s remarks, and some individuals are misinterpreting her words.
During the debate, some MPs argued that the National Coffee Amendment Bill 2024 was an attempt by the government to harm the interests of the Buganda region.
In response, Speaker Among urged MPs to avoid linking the bill to tribal issues, emphasizing that coffee is a key cash crop in other regions, such as Bugisu, and should not be viewed as targeting any particular group.
“The Speaker tasked the Government Chief Whip with ensuring that tribal sentiments do not obscure the bill’s purpose,” Obore stated, addressing the ongoing social media reports that imply Speaker Among made tribal remarks concerning the Coffee Bill 2024.
