The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has expressed a need for Parliament to enact a specific law to regulate and support the labor services of migrant workers.

Tayebwa was launching the Parliamentary Forum on Labor, Decent Employment, and Productivity.

Thomas Tayebwa the Deputy speaker of parliament made remarks while officiating at the launch of the parliamentary Forum on Labor, Decent Employment and Productivity held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala. He tasked legislators on the forum that making a law to regulate labor externalization should be their business number one.

In May Parliament passed the Employment Amendment Bill 2022, however, the House did not legislate a law specifically to streamline the rights, of migrant workers.  Now Tayebwa wants a law that will protect the remittances of migrant workers and also guarantee their safety at work.

Tayebwa also has put the government on alert to share with Parliament the basis of any tax revisions it will introduce for approval. He is concerned about the highest tax charges rate on the public servants in Uganda compared to other countries in the East African Region

The Chairperson of the Forum Roland Ndyomugyenyi (Rukiga county) says the body will provide a platform where strategic advocacy and pressure group groups can analyze labor, employment, and productivity issues. It effectively undertakes legislation on issues relating to labor employment and productivity.

Margret Rwabushaija the forum chairperson noted the forum will build a sustainable world of work for workers to thrive and promote social-economic transformation for all through productive employment creation.
