Uganda Cancer Institute Gets New Bosses

Uganda Cancer Institute Gets New Bosses.

The Uganda Cancer Institute, has unveiled new board members of the institute following the expiration of the tenure of the old board.

Inaugurating the new board at Serena hotel Victoria, the Minister of Health  Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng urged the new board to put more emphasis on the prevention and early detection of cancer in Uganda.

“The new board needs to put new strategies to reach out to the people and preach prevention, “Dr. Acheng said.

She added that the majority of cancer patients are women suffering from the cancer of the cervix and breast cancers.

The outgoing chairman of the board, Oncologist Professor. Dr. and the pioneer (UCI ) Executive Director Dr.Charles Olweny said some success achieved include construction of the new cancer ward and construction of radiotherapy bunkers.

These according to Dr. Olweny were constructed  before Parliament passed the UCI Bill which granted it full autonomy as a body cooperation institution.

 

The newly appointed chairman of (UCI) Prof. William Bazeyo Promised to ensure that Uganda Cancer Institute becomes a Center where patients go for treatment  as opposed to seeking specialized treatment from Bankoko and India among others.

The 11 member board was sworn in by the deputy registrar of anti-corruption court Pamela Lamono.

The 11 members include Prof. William Bazeyo as chairman , acting executive director of Mulago specialized hospital Dr. Rosemary Byanyima as Secretary to the board , other members include Dr. Charles Olaro ,Gertrude Nakigudde, Fatia Kiyange, Sarah Nafuna ,Counsel Mayambala Kasolo, Joseph Kasaija, Prilla Kabagambe Prof. Isaac Kajja  and Dr. Jackson Orem Uganda Cancer Institute Executive. Director.

This was the second board of the institute since the Uganda cancer institute act was enacted in 2016.
