Parliament’s Human Rights Committee has quizzed officials from both Uganda Police Force over the unresolved high-profile murders especially former Arua Municipality MP, Ibrahim Abiriga, and Joan Kagezi.

Appearing before the Human rights committee Officials from Police led by Christine Nanding, Deputy Director Legal and Human rights Uganda Police updated Parliament on investigation into High profile murders indicating that no single suspect has been prosecuted in the case of murder of former MP Ibrahim Abiriga who was killed together with his brother Said Kongo 2018. It is the same story to the murder of the former State Prosecutor Joan Namazzi Kagezi who was murdered in 2015.Nanding told the committee that investigations haven’t yielded much.
The remarks angered Rose Obiga District Woman Representative for Terego who fired back and expressed concerns of the people of west Nile who are not happy over the delayed juice for their son of the soil.
Abiriga was shot dead on 8th June 2018 near his home in Kawanda in Wakiso district and he was among other Ugandans gunned down in a similar manner and most of these murders have remained unresolved to date. The committee chairperson Fox Odoi tasked police to live to public expectations and investigate these cases to logical conclusions.
Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa had no kind words while reacting to the admission by Police for failing to arrest people who masterminded Abiriga’s murder saying the Force has no excuse because Parliament has always prioritized funding to security agencies even at the expense of crippling other sectors
Meanwhile Police has called for the general review of the entire police welfare to budget so that they are able to enhance salaries of UPDF officers which remains low against high standards of living.
