Speaker Among Cautions MPs on Delayed Coffee Report.
The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has asked members of Parliament to stop speculating and creating anxiety in public over the delayed debate on the report of the committee on trade, Tourism, and industries on the controversial coffee deal between the Government and the Uganda Vinci Coffee company Limited (UVCC)
Speaking, during the sitting of Parliament, Anita Among told the Members of Parliament that she is aware of the sentiments that have been expressed by the legislators in public which is denting the image of parliament.
The speaker also dismissed allegations and fears that the report would not see the light of day because of the interests at play, insisting the House will stand with the citizens. She also turned to the ministers and asked them to concede where they made mistakes in the controversial deal.
Legislators also fumed at the minister of finance Matia Kasaija who signed the controversial coffee agreement and warned him of the legal implications of his actions.
However, Kasaija has scoffed at his critics over the coffee deal and vowed to continue talking and defending the memorandum of understanding with UVCC regardless of the speaker’s Caution.
Legislators have continued to mount pressure on the administration of parliament to put the Trade Committee report on the order paper for debate and put an end to the controversy created by the Vinci agreement.
The report was handled by the Parliamentary Committee on Trade chaired by Mbarara City South MP Mwine Mpaka and they handed over the report to the speaker of Parliament last week.
