NRM MPs Given Two Weeks to Consult on Bail Reforms
President Yoweri Museveni who also doubles as the chairperson of NRM has given NRM MPs two weeks to consult their constituencies on his proposal for bail reforms.
Today’s NRM Caucus meeting ended in a stalemate as MPs failed to generate consensus with the president over bail reforms.
President Museveni has today addressed the NRM parliamentary caucus in Kololo on his proposal to amend the Constitution to scrap the right to bail for capital offenders. According to the government chief whip Thomas Tayebwa, MPs had a frank discussion with the president over the contentious matter.
But the meeting was not fruitful as legislators failed to generate consensus with the president. It was upon that stalemate that the president gave MPs two weeks to go back to their constituencies to consult.
Members of parliament explained why they can’t support reforms on bail saying the president was misguided on the matter since the right to bail is not automatic.
Others cited case backlog in courts of law which contributes to delays in dispensation of justice as a reason why the right to bail must be upheld and respected.
The NRM caucus is expected to sit in two weeks’ time to have further discussions on the matter.
