The just concluded operations in Kampala and Wakso districts by the national drug authority carried out in April 2021, the drug enforcement agency confirms closing 283 drug shops out of the 787 drug outlets inspected in the two districts.

Addressing a news conference today in Kampala, the head regions, William Tamale and manager central region Muhammad Lukwago notes that during the operation over six people were apprehended for operating drug shops, clinics without the necessary requirements with other found selling non-recommended drugs.

Officials at the authority further note they impounded 408 boxes of non-licensed medicine worth UGX.204,000,000.

The drug agency is now urging all Ugandans to be vigilant on scrupulous people operating drug shops and clinic without the needed legal requirements.

In a related story, The head of regions at national drug authority, William Tamale attributes the failure to act on pharmacies operating in and around public health facilities to the presidential directive which called for stoppage on the enforcement by NDA.

During COVID19 lockdown, president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni asked the drug enforcement agency to halt on its plans to act on all pharmacies doing business inside and around public health facilities yet he has earlier asked the agency to act.

Yesterday during the inspection of works at Mulago national referral hospital, officials decried the continued operations of private pharmacies inside public health facilities and some near the premises saying its against the policies of the land.

Now Tamale says, they are waiting for the stakeholders meeting the president planned to hold before they can take action as the enforcement agency.
