The government of Uganda is being tasked by the initiative for social and economic rights (ISER) to come out clear and give the dates when schools are to re-open for other classes to enable parents to prepare in advance.
On March 18th 2020, the president directed all education institutions to close which affected more than 15 million learners and 548192 and 188,000 teaching and non-teaching staff and this was as a result of curbing the likely spread of covid19.
According to the executive director ISER, Salima Namusobya, the continued closure of school has affected learners from vulnerable families who have now lost appetite for learning.
Namusobya further warns that if the schools remain closed, the country is likely to face huge literacy challenges.
Meanwhile, the programme manager right to education at ISER Musa Mugoya states that though government came up with alternative learning strategies, these have not done much to help learners in vulnerable communities as well as learners with disabilities hence the need to have the schools re-opened for all learners.
Reports have strongly indicated that the continued closure of schools due to covid19 has paused negative effects among them, school drop outs, early marriages, early pregnancies for girls, sell of schools, and loss of jobs among others which will pause problems to the country’s future.
They also ask government to consider taking up learners whose schools have been sold off by the proprietors adding that this will help them continue with their studies.
