Aspiring candidate for Omoro woman seat, Betty Laika, has asked the Government to expedite the proposed policy on retention of pregnant girls in schools in order to save the future of mothers in the country.
Laika says, although it has been a practice of girls in her area to drop out of school and get pregnant as early as 11 years due to poverty-related issues, a high number of school-going girls have become pregnant during covid19 lockdown. She said these should be allowed to continue with studies so that they are able to support themselves in the future.
Laika, who has been working as a social worker in London, is set to challenge the current Omoro woman member of parliament Catherine Lamwaka.
While speaking to journalists in Kampala, Betty explained that the reason why she is leaving her lucrative job in London to contest for the seat is to advocate for the education and health of girls as well as women whom she claims have not been well represented by the current woman MP.
She committed that she will partner with the government toProvide sanitary pads in Omoro district as a priority to ensure that girls do not leave school due to menstrual health-related reasons.
She also pledged to help school-going boys and girls with scholastic materials as a means of support for education in Omoro District.
